Dipl.-Ing. Lars Gräbner


Lars Gräbner is principal and founder of VolumeOne Design Studio in Detroit and holds a position as Associate Professor of Practice in Architecture at the University of Michigan, Taubman College of Architecture and Urban Planning.

Lars completed his Masters in Architecture (Dipl.-Ing.) at the University of Hannover, Germany, in 1996, where he was awarded the “1996 Prize of the University of Hannover” for outstanding achievements. In 1995 he joined Studio Daniel Libeskind in Berlin, where he held the position as lead designer for prestigious international projects and competitions.

Lars maintains a close dialogue between his practice and academia. Prior to his position at the University of Michigan, he taught at the ETH Zürich/ Switzerland and the Karlsruhe University of Arts and Design (HfG)/ Germany.

Lars Gräbner leads the office with partner Christina Hansen in Detroit, which has evolved to an award winning and internationally recognized design firm with projects in the United States, Spain, Germany, Italy, Switzerland, and China. As lead designer in the company Lars focuses on design methodologies, urban design strategies, sustainable building practices, and advanced construction methods. He has extensive experience in the design and construction of public and residential buildings, and urban spaces.

Lars has contributed to the publication “Mapping Detroit- Land, Community, and Shaping a City” (Wayne State University Press) with strategies of urban planning tools based on environmental needs.

Dipl.-Ing. Christina Hansen


Christina Hansen is principal and partner of Detroit based VolumeOne Design Studio since 2013. Since its establishment in 2011, VolumeOne has been recognized nationally and internationally with numerous awards.
In her role as designer and project manager she focuses on urban design strategies, integrated building design, contemporary mixed-use typologies, and advanced construction methods.

Besides her position at VolumeOne Design Studio Christina is a Lecturer at the University of Michigan, Taubman College of Architecture and Urban Planning, where she teaches graduate design studios in housing, regional environmental design and building construction.

Christina received her Master of Architecture from the University of Hannover, Germany in 2000.

Hansen gained extensive professional experience at Studio Daniel Libeskind in Berlin, Zago Architecture, Luckenbach-Ziegelman Architects, and Hamilton-Anderson Associates in Detroit, where she was involved in major hospitality, commercial, cultural, educational, residential as well as several urban design projects in the United Stated, Germany, and China.
